The warm season is long in Charlotte, and tennis and pickleball courts get used most of the year at clubs, schools, parks, neighborhood amenity centers and private homes. We build the tall chain link enclosures that keep balls in, with gates, and we add or replace windscreen.
Court fence is taller than yard fence, so the posts, footings and bracing are heavier. Windscreen makes it heavier still, because the screen catches wind that open mesh lets through. On an older court, posts that lean inward are a sign the footings were not sized for the screen. We look at that before hanging new screen on old posts.
Black or green vinyl-coated chain link is the usual finish, since it looks better and is kinder to hands and balls than bare galvanized wire. A fence of this height can need zoning or building review, and a court in a planned community will need the association's approval. We check both before the job is scheduled.
Tennis court fencing in Charlotte: common questions
Can you convert tennis court fence for pickleball?
Yes. We can add divider fences and gates inside an existing enclosure, or build new lower fence around dedicated pickleball courts.
Can you replace windscreen only?
Yes, if the posts and fabric are sound. We check the posts first, since screen adds a lot of wind load.
Does a backyard court fence need approval?
Often. Tall fences can need review by the city or county, and most HOAs want to approve a court. We check before building.
