Wood & Cedar Fences in Charlotte, NC

Wood is still the most common fence in Charlotte back yards. Most of it is pressure-treated southern yellow pine, which is grown and milled in the Southeast and treated to resist rot and termites. Western red cedar is the upgrade: it stays straighter as it dries and looks better without stain, and it costs more. We build dog-ear privacy, shadowbox, board-on-board, picket and capped styles in either wood.

Heat and humidity do the damage here. Pine boards arrive wet from treatment and shrink as they dry in the summer sun, so gaps open in a plain side-by-side fence. Board-on-board and shadowbox styles hide that. Posts fail first, at the point where they meet damp red clay. We set them in concrete shaped to shed water and keep the bottom of the boards off the ground so they do not wick moisture.

Many Charlotte neighborhoods have an HOA that names the allowed style, height and sometimes the stain color. Bring us the guidelines and we will quote to them. On a shared rear line, it is worth agreeing with your neighbor which side faces out before we build. We can also quote a shadowbox fence, which looks finished from both yards.

Wood & cedar fences in Charlotte: common questions

Is pine or cedar better for a fence in Charlotte?

Pressure-treated pine costs less and holds up well in the ground, so it is the usual choice for posts. Cedar looks better and warps less. A common mix is cedar boards on treated pine posts.

When can I stain a new pine fence?

After it has dried. Treated pine is delivered wet. Sprinkle water on a board: if it soaks in, the wood is ready. In a humid Charlotte summer that can take several weeks.

Will my HOA allow a wood privacy fence?

Most do, but many set the height, the style and which side faces out. Get written approval before we order materials. We can supply the drawing and description the board asks for.
